Canvas Design
Create original, museum-quality posters and visual art as .png and .pdf files using a design-philosophy-first workflow.
Overview
Canvas Design is an official Anthropic Agent Skill that creates original, design-forward visual art as .png and .pdf files — posters, art prints, identities, and editorial pieces — by writing a design philosophy first and then expressing it visually. It treats every request as art rather than a decorated document, aiming for museum- or magazine-quality output with minimal, intentional typography.
What is Canvas Design?
Canvas Design is a Claude skill (a folder of instructions Claude loads on demand) for making static visual art. It works in two stages: first it authors a design philosophy as a Markdown manifesto — a named aesthetic movement such as "Brutalist Joy", "Chromatic Silence", or "Concrete Poetry" — then the same model receives that philosophy and expresses it visually on a canvas. The result is roughly 90% visual design and 10% essential text, output as a downloadable .png or .pdf alongside the philosophy .md.
What it does
- Writes a 4-6 paragraph design philosophy (
.md) naming and articulating the aesthetic movement. - Produces a single-page, highly visual, design-forward PDF or PNG (more pages on request).
- Uses custom fonts sourced from the skill's
./canvas-fontsdirectory, treating typography as part of the art rather than typeset labels. - Applies a limited, cohesive color palette and systematic, repeating patterns or layered marks.
- Guards composition rules: nothing overlaps, nothing falls off the page, and every element keeps clear margins and breathing room.
How it works
The skill draws on design movements like Swiss formalism, Brutalism, Polish poster art, Le Corbusier, and Josef Albers' color interaction as reference points, then deduces a subtle conceptual thread from your request and weaves it invisibly into form, color, and composition. It borrows the visual language of systematic observation — dense accumulation of marks, repeated elements, clinical reference markers — so a piece can read like a diagram from an imaginary discipline. A built-in refinement pass pushes the work toward "pristine, a masterpiece of craftsmanship", polishing what exists instead of piling on more graphics.
Who it's for
It is for designers, art directors, marketers, and creators using Claude (claude.ai, Claude Code, or the Claude API) who want original poster art, gallery pieces, brand identities, or editorial spreads without commissioning a studio. No design software is required — you describe the brief in plain language and receive print-ready files.
What you can build
- Posters for events, venues, exhibitions, or campaigns.
- Abstract art prints and limited-palette compositions.
- Visual identity studies and typographic statements.
- Editorial or coffee-table-style multi-page PDFs that tell a tasteful visual story.
- Diagram-as-art pieces that map something ephemeral with clinical, systematic typography.
Why it matters
Generic AI layouts tend to look templated and amateur. Canvas Design instead starts from an articulated aesthetic philosophy and enforces master-level craftsmanship — deliberate spacing, contained margins, design-led fonts, and a cohesive palette — so the output reads as intentional, original art. Because it never copies a named living artist and exports standard .png/.pdf files, the work is both safe to use and ready to print, making it the authoritative Anthropic-authored way to produce static design with Claude.
